Tallow - A Natural Collagen Booster
Squeamish about the idea of slathering beef tallow on your skin?
I hear you. I was at first too. There are some AMAZING benefits of this natural fat, which as a lymphie, you might want to consider for your skincare. I have noticed a difference in the texture of my skin since using the balms for several months now.
SKIN BENEFITS:
Whole food ingredient for your skin
Anti-inflammatory - making it a good choice for folks with eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.
Comedogenic (won't clog pores).
Omega's 3, 6, and 9 - beneficial for the skin and our whole body health.
Source of vitamins A, B12, D, E, and K
Fatty acid make-up of tallow is very similar to our own skin - Tallow contains oleic acid, linoleic, palmitoleic, and stearic acids, which are the same fatty acids that are in in our sebum.
Tallow soaks into our skin deeply and hydrates for a longer time, much longer compared to a lotion. Tallow combines well with our sebum because it is similar in fatty acid composition.
Our bodies are wise and can make anything given the right environment, nutrients, and/or energy. putting nutrient rich moisturizers like Tallow encourages our body to produce collagen, engage in skin repair, which keeps our skin flexible and supple. Living with Lipidema and Lymphedema, our skin can become deficient in collagen in the areas of swelling.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS:
Bioregional fat from right here in Alberta. Using tallow instead of other fats such as Shea Butter reduces our environmental footprint, helping us live up to our values of being bio-regional sourced ingredients, while aiming for zero-waste.
Nose to tail - Helps reduce a known waste from the meat industry. Tallow used to be highly used by our ancestor for everything from making candles, sauteing foods, oiling leathers, to restaurants using it for frying. In recent decades, it has often ended up in the landfill as customers weren't buying it anymore.
Minimally processed fat = A whole-food ingredient. Which would you rather in your skincare and which would you rather cook with? Food is medicine and medicine is food.
NO Seed Oils! Seed oils are made in a highly industrialized way by mechanically extracted to remove the shells, then, chemically extracted with Hexane (a known carcinogen) to pull out the fatty acids, then purified and refined with bleach to create a clear and odorless oil. In Ayurveda, seeds are a PITTA food, warming in nature. Consuming this through your skin and/or in your diet isn’t worth it. Our body doesn’t recognize this fat anymore, it has a warm energetic nature to it, and treats it as a toxin, resulting in increased inflammation whether uses on the skin or in our diet. Tallow on the other hand is a KAPHA energetic fat. So it is cooling, heavy, nourishing in nature. When you are faced with chronic inflammation like in Lymphedema, monitoring the cooling/warming nature of foods as well as what goes on your skin can help you balance inflammation in your body better.
Common FAQ’s
Is it greasy?
No, but you don't need much to nourish your skin. It's not something you need to slather on like lotion. A little goes a long way and stays on your skin without feeling like its on top of your skin.
Will it make me break out?
No. Tallow is naturally non-comedogenic meaning it won't clog your pores, plus it's anti-inflammatory and cooling in it’s natural state, so it can help soothe inflammed, sensitive skin. If you have skin that is sensitive to the touch, red, rashy, hot feeling, or have been diagnosed with eczema, psoriasis or rosacea, tallow is known to be beneficial for these skin challenges. Often we are over-washing or putting on too many products which cause our skin to become overly sensitive to everything. STOP, and give your skin a break with something super hydrating and simple.
Will I smell like a steak, or will dogs chase me down the street?!
No, you won't smell like a steak...the tallow does has a slight smell, but so does unrefined Shea Butter, or plant oils. For our tallow balms, we first infuse the tallow with botanicals good for the skin and naturally aromatic like, orange peels, lavender, rose, calendula, vanilla bean, comfrey, and more. Then finish our blend with therapeutic grade essential oils to create an enjoyable skin experience for you.
Won't this encourage animals to be killed for their fats?
No. It is using what is already in the marketplace by taking what our modern society has seen as a waste, and making it useful again. Our ancestors knew the value of this animal fat and would make skincare, candles, and consume the fat throughout the winter, not wasting any. In our modern times with the increase of industrialization, tallow slowly became a waste, and was often disposed off, rather than used in our foods of skincare. As a society, we have folks who eat meat, wear leather, and now we are using tallow again.
